The way through Val Mara
The Mara stream travels 8 kilometres from its source at Mount Sighignola in Italy, before it runs into Lake Lugano at Maroggia.
Although this is only a small reservoir, it has a considerable significance and is characterised by its sudden and unpredictable increases in level. The inexhaustible supply of water here has for centuries driven the wheels of several mills and factories, and now powers a small power station owned by AIL (Aziende Industriali di Lugano SA).
Val Mara, whose name is derived from the name of the stream, begins at the shores of Lake Lugano, in the Maroggia and Melano territories, and gently stretches upwards towards Arogno and Rovio. Upstream of Arogno, the valley becomes very narrow, hemmed in by Mount Generoso and Mount Sighignola. After crossing the steep and winding stretch extending into Italian territory, the valley ends its journey at the plateau of Lanzo d’Intelvi.
