Monte Generoso

Monte Generoso

Monte Generoso, also known as Calvagione, is a peak of the Lugano Prealps on the border between Switzerland and Italy. It rises to over 1,700 metres, and from the summit there is a unique panorama stretching from Lake Como to Lake Maggiore and Lake Varese, with Lake Lugano at its feet. On particularly clear days you can even see the Milan skyline and the whole arc of the Apennines of Emilia, Liguria and Piedmont, south of the Po plain, in Italy.

It consists mainly of Moltrasio limestone, a sedimentary formation created about 200 million years ago, in the Lower Jurassic. The layering of the rock is clearly visible even to the naked eye: the strata can be up to 15 cm thick and formed on the sea floor from the deposits of the skeletons of marine vertebrates and mollusc shells.

Of enormous natural value, Monte Generoso was one of the few areas south of the Alps that remained free of ice during the glaciations. Many plant species therefore adapted to life on its slopes and, having adapted so well, continue to thrive, giving the flora and fauna of the Generoso an extraordinary richness and interest.

A rack railway, the Monte Generoso Railway, leaves from Capolago station, just south of Val Mara, easily reached by train, bus or car; a car park is reserved for Monte Generoso passengers.

Roughly every hour a train sets off for the summit, with intermediate stops at San Nicolao and Bellavista. Bellavista station has a small buffet with typical Ticino products, while at the summit, inside the Fiore di Pietra, there are a shop, a small museum, a self-service restaurant and an à la carte restaurant.

In 2014 the old hotel built at the end of the 1800s was demolished, and the Ticino architect Mario Botta designed and built a work of art on the Alps, opened in 2017. The railway too was completely restored a few years ago.

Monte Generoso
