Planet trail
On Monte Generoso, right where the rack railway arrives at the foot of the Fiore di Pietra, the Planet Trail begins: a unique walk that gives you a sense of the immensity of the solar system. Along this fascinating path, on the enchanting Italian–Swiss border, you come across detailed representations of every planet, from Mercury to distant Pluto. Each panel is accompanied by valuable information, telling the stories and mysteries of the bodies that populate our sky.
What is truly surprising is grasping the enormous distances that separate these celestial bodies, and how out of proportion they are to their actual size. Everything is on a scale of 1:10 billion, so each step equals about 10 million kilometres.
At the start of the planet trail there is also a sundial showing true solar time. This aluminium structure is 180 cm high and 150 cm wide. The trail is about 600 metres long and level; for everyone.
Planetenweg
